A Message to the Community from the Executive Director and Board of Directors
When we founded CREWS Coalition, our vision was never to establish another nonprofit organization. Our communities are already served by passionate organizations that work tirelessly to improve the lives of others. Their efforts matter, and their commitment deserves recognition. Yet despite decades of dedicated service, billions of dollars invested, and countless programs implemented, many of the same neighborhoods continue to struggle with violence, poverty, family instability, educational disparities, declining health outcomes, economic inequality, and hopelessness. That reality challenged us to ask a different question—not how do we create another program, but why do these conditions continue to exist despite all of our collective efforts?
The answer, we believe, lies in how we have approached community development. Too often we have become highly effective at responding to symptoms while giving far less attention to the conditions that produce them. We measure meals served, workshops conducted, grants awarded, and events hosted, yet rarely ask whether those efforts are fundamentally changing the trajectory of the community itself. Relief has value, but relief alone has never transformed a neighborhood. Transformation requires vision, consistency, accountability, and a long-term commitment to addressing root causes.
That conviction became the foundation of CREWS Coalition. We believe lasting community transformation is only possible when every sector of the community works together under a shared vision. Government agencies, schools, healthcare providers, businesses, faith communities, nonprofit organizations, resident leaders, and neighborhood associations all possess unique strengths. Individually, each organization can make a meaningful contribution. Collectively, they possess the power to reshape the future of an entire community. True organizational unity is not simply a partnership strategy—it is the cornerstone of sustainable community transformation.
We also believe the family remains the foundation of every healthy community. Mothers shape the emotional, moral, and spiritual foundation upon which children build their lives. Fathers provide leadership, protection, discipline, identity, and example. Together, they establish the values, confidence, and stability that every child deserves. When we strengthen mothers and fathers, we strengthen families. When families become stronger, communities become stronger. Family development is not simply another program area—it is one of the most important community development strategies available.
CREWS also believes that transformation begins with the way people think. Communities cannot consistently produce conditions that exceed the collective mindset of the people who live within them. If we expect different outcomes, we must first cultivate different thinking. When people begin to see themselves differently, they make better decisions. Better decisions produce stronger families. Stronger families build healthier neighborhoods. Healthy neighborhoods create thriving communities. To change our conditions, we must first change our thinking.
Our seniors remain one of our greatest untapped assets. They carry the wisdom, history, values, and life experiences that every generation needs. They should never be viewed simply as recipients of services, but as mentors, advisors, and community builders whose knowledge helps guide our future. Likewise, our youth are far more than tomorrow’s leaders—they are today’s emerging leaders. Every investment we make in developing young people of character, discipline, compassion, and purpose is an investment in protecting the transformation we are working so hard to achieve.
We also believe community development is one of the most important public safety investments our society can make. While law enforcement will always play a vital role in protecting our neighborhoods, experience has shown that enforcement alone cannot produce the lasting outcomes every community deserves. Safer communities are built when families are strong, children have mentors, seniors remain engaged, meaningful employment exists, educational opportunities inspire hope, organizations collaborate, and residents develop a shared sense of responsibility for one another. Public safety is strongest where community development is strongest.
For this reason, CREWS intentionally focuses on transforming one neighborhood at a time. Rather than dispersing our efforts across numerous communities, we believe in building deep relationships, earning trust, strengthening partnerships, and creating measurable, sustainable change within a single neighborhood before expanding our model elsewhere. We are not interested in simply visiting communities—we are committed to helping transform them.
That commitment drives everything we do. Our twelve ministries are not independent programs—they are a unified Community Development and Transformation Ecosystem. Each ministry complements and strengthens the others, creating an integrated system that addresses the root causes of community challenges while building stronger individuals, stronger families, and stronger neighborhoods. It is this unified ecosystem that distinguishes CREWS, because lasting transformation is achieved not through isolated efforts, but through interconnected solutions and organizations working together under one shared vision.
We invite you to become part of that vision.
